For our Youth Literacy class, we presented a group project on graphic novels. We worked in "reading circles", in which each person got a job assignment such as leader, connector, illustrator, vocabulary...er. I got to be the illustrator.

Our group's graphic novel was the first printed volume of Bayou, which is an online comic by Jeremy Love and Patrick Morgan. It's got a strong female protagonist, Lee, living in post-Civil War, pre-civil rights Mississippi. Her white best friend, Lily, gets kidnapped by a monster in the bayou, Cotton-Eyed Joe. Lee's father ends up getting blamed for Lily's disappearance. To save him from lynching, Lee must find Lily with the help of the other swamp monster, the kind Bayou. It deals with race, love and hatred, and Deep South folklore. It's extremely well done and I mean to finish it once school finishes.

The Merlin Big Bang ([livejournal.com profile] boxofmagic) went live today!

The site's over here and my contribution is here for [livejournal.com profile] staraflur's A Long Way to Go Before We Are Truly Divine. It's a great what-if story that was a joy to do artwork for. [livejournal.com profile] nasssty_slyth also did some lovely artwork for it as well.

So many others have some truly fantastic artwork and stories up, check it out!

*goes to read some before work*

At a computer at my aunt's workplace so I could use the internet. Oh internet, how I depend on you. I hope that we'll have access tomorrow so I'll be able to select my story on [livejournal.com profile] boxofmagic.

Speaking of Big Bangs, [livejournal.com profile] tardis_bigbang went live yesterday! Lots of Doctor Who related fan fic, art and vids for all! This was the first Big Bang I've ever participated in and was a ton of fun.

I did art for [livejournal.com profile] blackhemlock's For Captain and Cardiff, a Ianto-centric Torchwood/New Who story. It has some very interesting and fun interactions between Ianto and the Doctor, and the author has a brilliant Ten-voice. (Read the fic first, my artwork is semi-spoilery!)

I also did art for [livejournal.com profile] the_afterlight's Better Natures: Memory, a story that features a ton of characters from New Who, Torchwood and the Sarah Jane Adventures. The author does a great time of letting each character get their own individual moment to shine. I especially loved any time Jack and Donna spend together, hense the art. [livejournal.com profile] bluejeanius's cover puts my contribution to shame, I must say.

Here's
my comment page, for those curious. Now I have a bunch of fic to read, before I have to brush up on drawing the Merlin cast. :D

If you're in need of a female-empowerment pick-me-up and have a spare three minutes, check out this amazing multi-fandom vid. It's fantastic, period.

Oh LJ, I did miss you.

I was going to do a rec-post about how much I love the new BBC show Merlin, but [livejournal.com profile] sarahtales beat me to it. To summarize: it plays merry hell with the Arthurian legend, but it's so damn charming you can't help but love it. Plus Giles Anthony Head plays Uther and Mystery Sock Santiago Cabrera shows up as Lancelot!

Instead, I'll give a plug for John Hodgman's newest book, More Information Than You Require. It's been making me snort with laughter when I read it during lulls in work when I have to hang out at the register.

Just as he did on his last one, (most of) the introduction that is inside the book is also written on the cover. This one also has some testimonials from Jon Stewart ("An exercise in a certain kind of genius I truly do appreciate"), Ricky Gervais ("Hodgman is funny, clever, and has the face of a giant baby") and Justin Long ("I love this book so much I nearly read it!") among others.

In essence: John Hodgman is funny. He wrote another book. Therefore, buy his book because it will make you laugh. Perhaps even snort.

THAT IS ALL.

Torchwood Babiez: A comic like Muppet Babies, if Muppet Babies was a Torchwood/Doctor Who crossover with enough geeky cuteness to make you need a shot of insulin.

READ. NOW.

Rec time!

megaloo: (Psych: dynamic duo)
Sparing a moment before going to bed to rec the new USA series Psych to you good people.

It's about a guy who was trained by his cop father to have an amazing memory and powers of observation. Despite this he doesn't want to be like his dad, thus pretending to have psychic powers to get detective cases from the cops. (Being a psychic also manages to sound more believable, if possible.) You can dowload the pilot episode off iTunes for free until August 25th, so it's worth the watch. [livejournal.com profile] katzell and I watched the third episode without seeing the first two and still throughly enjoyed it and were able to pick up what was happening.

Personally, it does conflict with SGA timeslot-wise for me. But since we can tape shows in a Tivo-esque way, everything's cool. ;)
